What Are PCBs Made Of?

A printed circuit board (PCB) is a sandwich of non-conductive and conductive layers bonded together. The materials vary depending on your application — from simple consumer electronics to high-frequency aerospace systems.

Standard 2-Layer PCB Stackup

A typical double-sided PCB consists of:

During assembly, tin/lead or lead-free solder attaches components to exposed copper pads or plated through-holes.

FR-4 is the industry workhorse — ideal for prototyping and small to medium production runs. Metal-core PCBs (typically aluminum) solve thermal problems. Heat dissipates through the metal base, extending product life. PTFE-based laminates are used when signal integrity at high frequencies is critical (radar, 5G, aerospace).
